How long does an Ontario driver's abstract take?
If you order the uncertified 3-year record online, ServiceOntario emails it to you as a PDF immediately - there is no processing time at all. Every other combination is 15 business days: the certified version, and anything ordered by mail, is processed within 15 business days and then sent by regular mail via Canada Post.
The two timelines, and nothing in between
Instant: the 3-year record, uncertified, ordered online or in person. Online it is emailed as a PDF; in person it is printed while you wait.
Fifteen business days: the certified version of any record, and any record ordered by mail. ServiceOntario states these are processed within 15 business days and then posted by Canada Post. Driver documents - copies of specific documents on file - are longer again, at six to eight weeks.
There is no expedited tier and no middle option. This is why almost every answer you will find to "how long does a driver's abstract take" is wrong: it quotes the 15-day figure, which belongs to a different product from the one most people are ordering.
Nobody can make the instant one faster
It is already instant. A third party cannot compress a delivery that has no processing time, and we do not claim to - we sell the ministry's own instant online product, at the ministry's own speed, with the ministry's fee paid out of one charge instead of two.
Be sceptical of anyone advertising a faster driver's abstract in Ontario. There is nothing to be faster than, and Canada's Competition Bureau laid criminal charges in July 2026 against operators of a third-party service that had advertised an "expedited" version of a government process.
What can actually delay you
The record reflects the ministry's data at the moment of the search, so if you are waiting for something to appear on it - a recently paid fine, a reinstatement, a court correction - the delay is in that reaching the ministry, not in the search.
The other real delay is ordering the wrong product. Discovering that a certified copy was needed after receiving the uncertified one costs the fee again plus the full fifteen business days.
